Associate Director, Environmental

JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview

Reporting to the Director, Energy and Environment, the Associate Director, Environment will support ongoing environmental compliance for the GTAA.

Accountable for ensuring the environment teams deliver on key performance targets that are critical to the regulatory compliance, social license, safety and success of Toronto Pearson and the airlines that serve our passengers.

Leads the Environment teams (internal staff and contractors) and is accountable to deliver a world class level of service, safety, compliance and ESG leadership to support the ongoing success of the GTAA, our aviation partners and meet or surpass the expectations of our passengers and local community.

As a member of the Airport Development & Technical Services’ Management Team, support the development of Energy and Environment’s short- and medium-term business strategy, influence forward-thinking management decisions, and contribute to Airport Development & Technical Services’ overall success.

Key Accountabilities

Provide ongoing direction and support to environment team managers, staff and consultants for oversight of the following:

  • Ongoing regulatory compliance, planning, tracking and
  • Site spill response, reporting and follow-up as-
  • Water quality management, including managing a comprehensive storm water management program which includes regular monitoring and sampling
  • Soil management activities including monitoring and site remediation as-
  • Completion of environmental assessments of all airport projects and Facility Alteration Permits (FAPs) to determine the environmental impact of the project and to recommend mitigation measures to reduce the environmental impact.
  • Conducting regular monitoring and reporting of air quality and recommendations for improvement
  • Management and continuous improvement of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

Engagement with our employees, regulators, customers, suppliers, communities and other interested stakeholders Support transparency in external reporting and in dialogue with stakeholders

Expand partnerships and continued collaboration with industry stakeholders.

Ensure cost-effectiveness of the delivery of safe, reliable and compliant environmental strategies. Develop and manage departmental budgets.

Manage operationally critical service and supplier contracts and a storm water facility renewal program in excess of $10million.

Support environmental approval processes and environmental risk management for multi-billion dollar airport infrastructure programs.

Lead a collaboration with GTAA groups and third parties to ensure environmental leadership and compliance.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor Engineering or Environmental Science or equivalent

Experience

  • 10 years of experience in environmental management in airport or similar industry. Experience with management in a unionized environment
  • Experience developing and managing financial budgets and forecasts
  • Experience working with government or regulatory agencies.

Certifications/Designations/Licences:

  • P.Eng or relevant environmental designations

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Proven leadership skills and extensive stakeholder relationship experience, problem solving and analytical experience.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate and communicate across all levels of the organization.
  • Preparing presentations to various levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge developing and managing financial budgets and forecasts
  • Knowledge working with government or regulatory agencies.
  • Preferred:
    • Airport Operations Knowledge
    • Established professional network of airport industry or similar stakeholders and customers.
    • Knowledge of Federal environmental compliance and reporting requirements
    • Ability to analyze data to establish trends and root cause analysis using tools such as Excel (MS Office suite).
    • Knowledge of best practices for managing environmental compliance for air, water and soil
    • Knowledgeable in Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001 preferred)
